The life and art of Pierflavio Gallina: a journey between Turin, the Langhe and the world of contemporary art

Pierflavio Gallina, born in 1948 in Santo Stefano Belbo, is a Piedmontese artist who has dedicated many works to his fellow citizen and literary god – Cesare Pavese. His artistic training took place in Turin in the 70s and during his career he performed in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Gallery of Modern Art (GAM) in Turin. His art focuses on the landscape and nature of his homeland, the Langhe, and uses different colours, fabrics and materials to evoke a harmonious and suggestive atmosphere. Among his solo exhibitions are those at the castle of Barolo, at Palazzo Salmatoris in Cherasco and at the Cesare Pavese Study Center in Santo Stefano Belbo. In 2018he celebrated his 70 years with the traveling exhibition "EX VOTO”.

“Pierflavio Gallina's brilliant idea is to recover the ancient popular and peasant tradition of ex votos and apply it to the true grace we have received: life. Life here and now. We are lucky to be born in Europe, very lucky to be born in Italy, extremely lucky to be born in Piedmont, and blatantly lucky to be born or to live in the Langhe area.

Aldo Cazzullo, 2018

“…Then he opened up to experimentation. He used primary materials, iron, terracotta, metal plates, and also sophisticated, transparent and deceptive materials. He has created more allusive works: but deep down, that attachment to the earth, to its elements, has never failed.”

Giovanni Carandente, 1990

“…The vineyard, which constitutes the main motif of his artworks, is a vivid memory of the Langhe area.”

Luigi Carluccio, 1971
